Speedy Day

Recently, I've been looking a lot closer at my Cateye cycling computer. It started mostly because I suspected it exaggerated the temperature on hot days. As would be natural, this happens more when the computer is in the sun, but appears to happen even in the shade. Still, I didn't buy it to tell me the precise temperature and barometric pressure. I got it when I was riding 20 miles to work and it gave me a pretty good arrival time estimate.

Yesterday, however, the computer decided that flattery was in order. You see, it told me I was riding at 62.5MPH. If true, that'd be an all time record for me on flat terrain. It was even better, because there was a bit of a side wind at the time.

There was only one LITTLE problem. At the time, I was stopped at a traffic light. I really wish I'd gotten a photo because it settled down by the next time I stopped. I guess this is the speed record that got away.

My alternate title for this post: "Fried Cateye Brains."

My wireless bike computer used to do that when I'd stop over one of those inductive loop red light sensors. Although it's also done it while I was moving once or twice. I put that down to some ambient radio signal. Or maybe aliens.

I shall have to test the induction sensor theory. I WAS over a sensor when my computer told me I was going fast. I always stop over sensors so perhaps it is just this one or only when it is also hot.

I think it's probably aliens. either that or all the HGH you've been taking :)

the nice thing about the temp reading high, is that you can claim extra badass points- I rode to work when it was 103!

If it wasn't aliens then maybe it thought it was a pacemaker and was reading your heart rate?

The aliens usually show up while you're waiting at a traffic light. It's when you least expect it.

"Fried Cateye Brains" cracked me up.

They are delicious!

I had a CatEye, back in the late-80s or early-90s that would read 99.9 mph every time I rode under a low-hanging powerline.

I replaced my wireless computer with a wired one just so I wouldn't have to worry about the induction loops. Or aliens.

But the thermometer on it only shows 2 digits. So I've been riding in 01 deg F temps lately. :)

Janice, with the temp at 01 degrees, you should have come west for our LBS 75% off winter wear sale! At least if you trust that computer...
