I trust the rules of the road. But I verify what motorists are really going to do before I commit to a maneuver. This morning, I was on a two-lane road, complete with typical double yellow "no passing" lines. I'd signaled and was setting up for my left turn onto another street and a car was behind. Doing the second head check, that dweeb was going to pass me, even with my left arm hung out for the world to see. Sure enough, the driver passed right where I would have been fully leaned over.
I'm not sure why a motorist feels the need to make an illegal pass where a cyclist is clearly going to make a left turn, but it happens more often than would seem logical. Maybe they're like Great White Sharks and their eyes get covered up right before the strike.
Trust, but verify. Reagan was talking about nuclear arms, but he could have been talking about traffic just as easily. I don't know, maybe the driver didn't notice my signal. It was still pretty dark. Maybe I need to get some LED bracelets or something...

LED bracelets! Now, that's a thought :)
Just get some glow sticks.
Aren't glow sticks a one-time use item? Nowadays it's dark five days a week going to work.
And THAT is why you VERIFY! You live to post again. And it didn't even qualify as much of a stress riser beyond the "what a jerk" thought...
