ULTIMATE Driving Machine

BMW Isetta, Seen at Ocean Shores on April 28, 2018
Two versions of the ultimate driving machine are presented for your consideration. The second one might also fit in yesterday's "Rust Never Sleeps" post...

This Might be Considered a "Rat Rod"

For some reason, I was thinking about Isettas not long ago. I don't remember ever seeing a real one, but somehow I saw a model of one when I was under 10 years old. And in a movie or two, probably.

I have seen quite a few Issetas over the years but cannot remember ever seeing one with those grilles in the front door......

Apparently, the grilles in the front door were an option that let fresh air into the passenger compartment on the Isetta 300. Most Isettas do not have the grilles, but they were included on ones built in Argentina, among other places (including Germany). Google Isetta in "images" and they appear here and there, including ones that have DEFINITELY not been tampered with. I did not previously realize that Isettas were also built in the UK from 1957 to 1964, and Tri-Tech also built Isetta replicas in the UK.

You can always rely on the UK to come up with a replica of something....

I've seen one on the road, once, in 1966, on Elm Street in Thomaston, Maine. It was a late fall evening around dusk. I knew what it was but I didn't quite believe it. It was a strange sight in that place and time (it's a strange sight anywhere) although Maine was a living car museum back then. You could see anything from the 1920s onward in regular use.
