Seattle needed a bit different approach. A random cyclist, we'll call her "Linda A," had a lot of experience on a bike, but had never really understood that she needed to take charge of her motorists. She doesn't have a Land Rover, so I improvised and, on our 20 minute ride, explained "The Ford Escort" rule (don't do anything on the bike she wouldn' do in her Ford Escort), and, as in swimming, when learning to swim faster, practice the stroke mechanics before putting them all together.
That was all it took. She rode to work today and it all worked. This IS Seattle so some bike lane work still needs to happen, but I sensed a warm feeling towards the motorists that was missing before.
