IMO, one of the best movies highlighting bikes of all time was "Breaking Away," directed by Peter Yates. Many thanks to "Jim's Bike Blog" for the reminder.
Peter Yates was also known for movies such as Bullitt. He was 82 and had been ill for some time.
Less well known is that much of the "Breaking Away" movie was based on historical incidents and the real life Dave appears as an announcer in the movie. Y'all in Indiana, ESPECIALLY Apertome who's just started at Indiana University, should tip your caps and observe a moment of silence for Yates.
Dave Blase recounts about the movie and about the event:
Ciao!

Yay! for the Cutters!
Both Bullitt and Breaking Away were enjoyable movies! Thanks for the post, otherwise I may not have ever known about the director passing.
Peace :)
Yeah, news has definitely been spreading fast around here. Bloomington/IU are still very proud of Breaking Away, it's sort of our 15 minutes of fame, I'd say.
I have found that movie pretty hard to locate for renting... I've considered buying it online many times. The last time I saw it was when I was a kid.
Being a Boilermaker, I can't help but like the movie because IU loses in the end. However, I also grew up in that area of the state so that gives it that extra coolness factor. As Chandra said, thanks for the post I didn't know he had passed.
How does IU lose? Dave enrolls there as a student and the movie closes with the IU fight song. Its those smarmy frat boys that lose. Of course, they were IU students, not imports from Purdue.
BTW, Rantwick, all my kids know most of the lines of Breaking Away by heart. They also know Dave Stoller was riding a bike built right here in the good old USA.
