What's With Hit and Run?

In the Dallas Morning News blog, if you search HERE, you'll see LOTS of links to hit and run "accidents." A casual look at those suggests that more often than not, the victim is not in a motor vehicle. Is this the new way to escape responsibility?

Civic responsibility is becoming a rare commodity, Steve. Sadly.

They may temporarily escape getting caught, but they remain guilty / responsible for the rest of their sorry life.

In my state (NC), it is the most common method to get yourself a lesser prison sentence. If a driver under the influence causes a death by vehicle, there is a minimum 20 year prison term. However, if that same driver runs from the scene and takes the time to sober up and then is caught or turns themselves into police, then there is a maximum 2 year hit and run sentence. It pays to run away.

Painstaking and intelligent reconstructions of crimes, leading to successful prosecution, only occur on TV. Let the tale and the trail grow cold. Let some dust and mist obscure events and recollection fade. It becomes too expensive to the taxpayers to bother really chasing down leads.

Most people are never as sorry they did something wrong as they are that they got caught.

In Georgia, there is no need for a front license plate. So, if someone harasses you from behind, you may not have the fortune of taking a photo of their front license plate. And, by the time they pass you, it may be too late to take a photo or read their license plate even.

I like Khal's observation. Sad indeed!

No front licenses in New Mexico, either. But we do have open carry....

So who cares if you can't see the license....

Khal: except we can't go to work like that...the thought has otherwise crossed my mind!

The thought has crossed my mind too and I keep telling myself I need to calm down :)

Don't forget that in TX you can shoot first if you "feel threatened". I think about a half dozen cyclists shooting the radiators out of cars being used to intimidate might get the law changed, or driver behavior changed.
